Grammar Time!

Grammar Checks are every Friday!  1st period quizzes with Grey Days (usually).

G1: There, Their, and They're

 Link to the general rule.

Diaz Tips:
From here to there, the "E"s are the give away for location.

They + are = They're  is a contraction (y'all)

Their: possessive

There: from here to t(here) and t(here)...location

G3: Contraction vs. Possessive

Grammar Girl link or quick little look at the rule...
Contractions:
  • That + is = That's
  • Let + us = Let's
  • It + is = It's
  • It + has = It's

Possessive:
  • Its = Look at the dog; it dropped its ball.
  • Ours = The night was ours.
  • Hers = The only pie I liked was hers.

G5: prepositional phrases & commas

Link to description of prepositions and prepositional phrases.

Sentences that begin with prepositional phrases should include a comma after the phrase if the phrase contains four or more words.

G2: FANBOYS: Commas and Conjunctions

Grammar Girl and Comma Splices

Conjuctions: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So

A dependent (not Beyonce) clause does NOT need a comma because it needs the help of the independent clause (Beyonce).

Two independent clauses (Beyonce and Jay Z) can stand on their own, so they NEED a comma to give them their own space.

G: 4 Were, Where, and We're

Were: past tense of "are"

Where: from here to t(here) and w(here)...location

We're: contraction, dudes!  We + are
